Control

You don't need to control everything.

On the contrary, you need to let go of the need to control everything.

Take control of your thoughts, make a plan, and then take control of that which you CAN control.

Let God have the rest.

The Pain of Joy

Consciousness is the ability to release the old and embrace the
new with the awareness that all things end at the appropriate
time and that all things begin at the appropriate time.
– Carolyn Myss

I have suffered, so completely, throughout my life in times of loss.

The loss of my first real, adult relationship rendered me a blubbering mess for weeks.  How could he leave me?  How could he just walk away like that?

The loss of my Gram when she died.  She was more a mother to me than my mother.  It left a hole in my soul when she moved on, leaving me behind.

When I was forced to move eleven hours away from the best friend I'd ever had up until that point.  The one person I felt understood me.  How did they expect me to just pick up and move on, all by myself?

And there's SO many more instances.  So much more loss and pain that I've felt through my short life.  It's easy for me to understand how people come to completely identify with that pain and loss they experience and become less.  How they can let that loss carve a hole into them that stands forever a gaping chasm in their lives.  I can understand.

I experienced a shift in my consciousness when I was about 21.  A shift that forever changed the way I perceived all loss from that day, forward.  It was the most deeply profound moment of my lifetime and I'll never forget the staggering reality that it left behind.

I knew I could have been saved so much pain had I had this realization years earlier, but I understood at that point that I had to reach a place of contentment first.  I had to be happy to be where I was before I could realize the beauty that was the pain I had suffered.

How can pain and loss be beautiful?  How can it be divine in its heart wrenching misery?

I realized, very suddenly, and with amazing clarity, that if I had not been through each of those losses and experienced each of those miseries, the path I was walking would have forked me off into another direction.

Each pain was a crossroad in my life where I gathered my faculties and made choices.  Where I changed and grew and became this wonderful woman that I was in the process of becoming.

Had I not become her... Had I not took those steps and felt those things and found the new, and unexpected path beneath my feet... I could not have ended up at this particular destination.  This beautiful, fulfilling, loving, accepting, warm, and wonderful destination.

I stopped looking back on my pain and using it as the definition of my shortcomings.  I stopped defining my lack by my loss.

I began to see that it was actually my happiness that was defined by my loss.  It was the indescribable joy I was living in that was the result of my loss, because I wasn't actually lacking anything.

We are spiritual beings, here on earth, having this human experience.  Loss is form.  Where there is form, there will inevitably be loss.  But our joy in this experience isn't based on our possession of form, for that only sets us up to experience loss.

Our joy is based upon the growth that we experience through loss.  Upon our seeing that all things, gain AND loss, have conspired and are always conspiring to bring us to the place of our ultimate joy.  Our ultimate realization that our own happiness IS the reason for the happening of all things.

Do Unto Yourself

Too many people are living in a prison that they have themselves manufactured.
- Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith

Your mind is given to you as a tool.  It is very useful indeed.  It allows you to contemplate and reason.  It allows you to plan and remember.

It also allows you to imprison yourself, held captive by shame and regret.  Beaten down by your own thoughts and rendered immobile in a belief that you are an undeserving failure.

Every time you beat yourself up, you cast another iron bar in your self imposed prison.  Every time you believe that little voice in your head that says unkind things, you allow demons to rule your world.

Imagine your child making a mistake and verbally abusing themselves for it.  As a parent, you would immediately rush in explaining that mistakes are just mistakes.  In short, shit happens.  But we all move forward and just intend to do better next time.

Why is that so hard to believe about ourselves?

Why do we believe that we should never slip up?  Why do we deny our human-ness.  Why do we understand and accept with grace and kindness, the mistakes of others while belittling and blaming ourselves?

I believe in the golden rule which says, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."  And I believe that generally speaking, we DO.

However, I think a more useful and accurate rule for the advancement of our own humanity and self love would be to "Do unto yourself as you do unto others."

Give yourself the same kindness and understanding as you do to others.  Don't berate yourself.  Don't hate yourself.  Any being that acts out in negatively perceived ways only does so out of fear.

Why would you bully someone who is afraid?

If you're disappointed in yourself, vow to change.  Vow to do better.  Vow to BE better.

But no one ever felt inspired to be MORE because they were bullied or belittled into it.  LOVE is what inspires.  Love is what transcends the mind and the mind made demons.

All you need is love.

You are a Lover to be Loved

You believe that a lover will bring you love, but it is your love that will bring you a lover.
- Alan Cohen

Who doesn't want someone to love?

Although that's not REALLY the case.  People don't want someone to love.  People want someone to love THEM.

That's the real truth of the matter.  We want someone who does and says the right thing all the time and makes us feel special and worthy and loved.  In the face of such loving, we agree, in turn, to love them back.

However, if they fail to lift us up and "love" us the way we want, we will withhold our love from them and blame them for our bad feelings.

This is not love.

This is fear.

Fear of not being lovable.  Fear that I'm not worthy of the love that I seek.  Because I hate me.  I'm not beautiful enough or smart enough or worthy enough, so please, PLEASE love me so that I may feel loved, because without you, I am unloved, by even myself.

Have you ever loved someone, romantically or other, and all they ever did was put themselves down?  Talk about how unworthy they are.  Or pick out traits they have and question their validity or beauty or lovability.

No one wants to spend all their time trying convince someone of their own worthiness.  And when someone doesn't value themselves, it's glaringly obvious to anyone who is around them.

If you want to attract a lover, you must first be your own lover.

When you dress your body, do so kindly and lovingly.  When you speak of yourself, do so kindly and lovingly.  We are so kind and loving to so many that surround us, yet when it comes to ourselves we are brutally judgmental and mean.

If you believe that is what you deserve, even from yourself, then why would anyone ever treat you differently that that?

In order to cultivate loving relationships with other people, you have to have already cultivated a loving relationship with yourself.  You are, after all, an entire HALF of all future relationships.  How can a whole relationship be loving and healthy if only half is?  It's totally contradictory.

Lovers are attracted to lovers.

Go out and love.  Love your life and your family and your job and your car and your clothes and your body and yourself and and and and and.

LOVE IT ALL!

For when you do, the Universe cannot help but to love you in return.  Those who love are deeply attracted to those who love.

You are a lover to be loved, so love you!  The rest will fall into place.

Empowering Thoughts

We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.
– Carlos Castaneda

I thought this was a beautiful quote to ponder on the early morning of the Winter Solstice.

I have been looking forward to the changes in me that this new cycle brings in.  One of my "New Year's Resolutions" is to be more diligent in my thoughts toward other people.

I'm going to think about them.  Thinking is what we DO.

I intend to send more powerful and light filled thoughts out to everyone who crosses my mind.
I intend to send fewer thoughts of disagreement, dislike, discomfort, anger, resentment, ego, gossip, etc..

It's going to take me the same amount of time and effort to think either thing, but while one train of thought will empower, the other will tear down.

I don't want to feel the need to tear down to assuage my ego anymore.  I am giving up the need to be right or superior.  I have been giving it up, little by little, over these past few years, but I feel like I'm in a place now where I'll be able to let more, and possibly then rest, go.

It occurs to me that, if I encountered a person who was sleep walking, enthralled with the belief that the dream in which they walk, is real, I would never try to make them feel like less for their state of awareness.  If anything, I would gently nudge them hoping they awaken.

The light filled, loving thoughts and actions are the nudge.

You will never belittle, shame, or guilt anyone into being more loving.  You can only love them into it.

Leave the Past & Love the Future

Do not brood over your past mistakes and failures as this will only fill your mind with grief, regret, and depression. Do not repeat them in the future.
– Swami Sivananda

We've all made mistakes.  We've all acted in a way in which we are not proud.  We've all failed.

Dwelling in thoughts of past wrongs serves no purpose.  You will never feel bad enough to undo what's been done.

You can, however, identify the mistake and move forward focused on the solution.  Focused on the future.  Focused on replacing the grief of failure with rejoicing in success.

Teach a Man to Fish...

If you just set people in motion, they’ll heal themselves.

– Gabrielle Roth

You don't need to preach at anyone or convince them of anything.  When people have the desire to heal, all they really need is for someone to just turn them in the right direction and help them take the first step.

Growth and momentum usually take care of the rest.

We can't do the healing for anyone else though.  We may provide a temporary fix, but healing is an inside job.  Maintenance of health is also an inside job.

In my opinion, the best way to help someone to heal is to see them through God's eyes.  Then help them to see themselves as you do.
